Sociology commends Dr. Katia Moles’ six years of teaching excellence and service. Dr. Moles joined the Department of Sociology in the fall of 2017 and subsequently carried her expertise in sociology of religion to the Religious Studies Department. As Dr. Moles is taking on a new role in the Engineering Department, we take a moment to recognize highlights from her years as a teacher-scholar in our community.

Teaching over a dozen courses across the curriculum, Moles has introduced students to social ethics perspectives on sociology of gender and sexuality as they intersect with institutions such as education, religion, and media. Other curricular contributions by Moles include successful submission of over half a dozen syllabi that enrich our Core Curriculum with courses in Sociology and Religious Studies, some of which are cross-listed with classes in Women's and Gender Studies and Ethnic Studies.

In the tradition of the SCU teacher-scholar, Moles’ teaching continues to be informed by her scholarship, which garnered an Elisabeth Schüssler Fiorenza New Scholars Award for her article, "A Culture of Flourishing," that was funded by the SCU Markkula Center for Applied Ethics Hackworth Grant. Moles has enjoyed collaborating with sociology faculty and students thanks to funding including a Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) Grant, a Teaching and Technology Innovation Grant, and a Bannan Grant, among others.

As she prepares for her new role in the Engineering Department, we congratulate Dr. Moles on her award-winning teaching and scholarship, wish her well in her work as a tech ethicist, and look forward to continued collaborations with her!
