- 2025 WinnerIris Stewart-Frey, Environmental Sciences & Studies
Dr. Iris Stewart-Frey is a prominent hydrologist whose research centers on the effects of climate change on water resources, environmental justice, and sustainability in California, Central America, and Mexico. A particularly impactful example of her applied research is the "NicaAgua" climate forecasting app, developed in partnership with communities in Nicaragua to support smallholder farmers in adapting to climate change. This project exemplifies her commitment to interdisciplinary scholarship and social equity. Over the past decade, Dr. Stewart-Frey has published 16 peer-reviewed papers, most co-authored with SCU undergraduates. She actively seeks cross-campus collaboration, especially through her long-standing and productive partnerships with faculty in the School of Engineering. Her work has received support from the Rose Foundation, Cal EPA, NSF, and competitive internal programs including the Whitham Collaborative Grants and the Markkula Center.
