How to Backup iTunes

NOTE: Due to time constraints and limited resources, the PC Replacement Program will not backup your personal iTunes Library or other personal music files. We will only backup iTunes Libraries and/or music files if they are used for University-related business. These instructions will assist you with backing up your personal iTunes Library.

Windows

  1. Make sure you are running the latest version of Apple iTunes by opening the program and selecting "Help", "Check for Updates". Install the latest version, if prompted.
  2. This process will only backup your Apple iTunes Library. Any music files created outside of iTunes will not be backed up. If you'd like to back up any additional music files, you can either back them up manually (which is outside the scope of these instructions) or you can import your additional music files into iTunes. To import the additional files, select "File", "Library", "Consolidate Library..." and follow the on-screen instructions.
  3. iTunes only supports backing up the iTunes Library to CD or DVD. To begin, select "File", "Library", "Back Up to Disc".
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts to copy your Library to CD or DVD.
  5. To restore your Library on a different computer, start up iTunes and put in the first disc.
