Special Dean's Recognition Award

Researcher of the Year Award

Honors a full-time faculty member with an outstanding record of scholarship and research contributions. Nominations are solicited and accepted from faculty each winter quarter for accomplishments made during the previous year. Each spring, a small faculty committee recommends a recipient of this award based on the quality, record, and impact of the faculty member’s scholarship.  The committee is empaneled and administered by the Associate Dean for Research, and the final decision for the award is made by the School of Engineering Dean.

Award for Teaching Excellence

Honors a full-time faculty member, typically with a minimum of five years of teaching experience at SCU. Nominations are solicited and accepted from both students and faculty at any time during the year and are specifically solicited from students at the end of each quarter.  Each spring, a small faculty committee recommends a recipient of this award based on consistently demonstrated excellence in teaching, outstanding teaching evaluations, reputation as a mentor to students, and noteworthy curriculum development. The committee is empaneled and administered by the Associate Dean for Research, and the final decision for the award is made by the School of Engineering Dean.

Adjunct Lecturer of the Year Award

Honors a quarterly part-time adjunct instructor who has taught within the School of Engineering during the past year. Nominations are solicited and accepted from both students and faculty at any time during the year and are specifically solicited from students at the end of each quarter.  Each spring, a small faculty committee recommends a recipient of this award based on consistent excellence in teaching and on outstanding teaching evaluations. The committee is empaneled and administered by the Associate Dean for Research, and the final decision for the award is made by the School of Engineering Dean.

Gerald E. Markle Award

Honors Gerald Markle, former distinguished faculty member and the founder and first chair of the School of Engineering’s Department of Applied Mathematics. This award is bestowed on either a full-time or adjunct faculty member who has distinguished himself/herself in teaching a course in Applied Mathematics. Selection of the award winner is managed by the Chair of the Department of Applied Mathematics and approved by the School of Engineering Dean.

Dean's Recognition Award 

Modeling after the President’s Special Recognition Award, we are pleased to announce a new award in the School of Engineering, the Dean's Special Recognition Award. This award acknowledges the importance of learning and of advancing the mission and quality of Santa Clara as a Catholic, Jesuit university.  This recognition may be awarded to an individual faculty member, a group of faculty and staff, or a department or other unit. The guidelines for the awards are for accomplishments in one or more of the following areas:

  • Outstanding achievement by a teaching scholar in teaching, scholarship and service over the past three years;
  • Clear contribution to integrated and active learning by students as persons of competence, conscience, and compassion;
  • Collegial contribution to advancing the mission, goals, and quality of Santa Clara as a Catholic, Jesuit university.
