Loan Counseling, MPN and Disbursement Dates

Loan Counseling

Students borrowing for the first time through the Federal Direct Loan program must complete entrance counseling prior to the first loan disbursement. Loan counseling can be found by going directly to StudentAid.gov.

NOTE: Until you complete your entrance loan counseling, your Federal Direct Loan will not be disbursed.

In addition, exit counseling must be completed prior to withdrawal, reducing enrollment to less than half-time or graduation. All students who have borrowed through the Federal Direct Loan program must complete loan counseling at StudentAid.gov.

Master Promissory Note

A Master Promissory Note (MPN) is required for all first-time Federal Direct Loan program borrowers. The MPN authorizes the Financial Aid Office to credit your loan funds to your student account. MPNs are generally good for ten years.

NOTE: Until you complete your Master Promissory Note (MPN), your Federal Direct Loan will not be disbursed.

Disbursement Timeline

Start Date: Funds are normally disbursed 10 days before classes begin.

Ongoing: Disbursements continue throughout the academic year year as new FAFSA applications are completed.

Restrictions: Funds cannot be released early. Additionally, aid for future terms cannot be disbursed during the current term.
