Sociology Senior wins annual award for her story “Lighter”

Amanda Eason graduated in spring 2020 with majors in Sociology and Environmental Studies and minors in Political Science and Sustainability. This June, she received the English Department’s McCann Short Story Prize, awarded annually to a Santa Clara student for an unpublished story under 20 pages. Here is what Amanda had to about the award:

"I am so surprised and honored to receive the English Department's McCann Short Story Prize. My story, "Lighter", depicts the resilience of a firefighter named Lena who struggles to overcome misogyny in the workplace as well as trauma from a past relationship. While my professional goals are focused on promoting sustainable living and community development, in my personal life I have always felt passionate about using creative writing to connect with myself and others. This award has given me the confidence to share my work with more friends and family!"
