Bicycle-Powered Generator Display (ENGR 110, Winter 2009)

Students: Karen Chapski, Ben Chery, Sean Schiff

Advisor: Shoba Krishnan

Using an old bike, SCU students created an energy generator to teach Walden West campers (students in 5 th and 6 th grade) about electricity and alternative energy. The SCU students connected three types of light bulbs: incandescent, compact fluorescent (CFL), and a light-emitting diode (LED). By riding the bike, the campers are able to physically feel how much effort it takes to create the energy to light up each of the three types of light bulbs. The generator will be accompanied by an informative display about energy conservation.
