Ann Skeet, senior director of leadership ethics at Santa Clara University’s Markkula Center for Applied ethics, said it’s true that everyone makes ethical errors — sometimes stemming from blind spots and lack of experience. She also pointed to the fact that Trudeau was born into privilege, saying he may not have had as many opportunities to reason through some of these issues.

But each person develops their ethical conscience over time — and after three serious, and very different alleged ethical infractions, she said — it’s fair for Canadians to start asking what Trudeau is doing to improve his own.

“You should at this point get it that people are watching what you do.”
