Leavey School of Business Curriculum and Other Questions:

How will the School of Business make first year students feel like a part of a community this fall given all of the social distancing requirements?
The introductory course, BUSN 70, for all incoming first year business students will provide an opportunity for community building. Additionally, the many SCU and LSB clubs and organizations will be recruiting new members in appropriate, safe formats.  Other activities such as speaker series, workshops (whether in person or online) will also build community.

What first year business classes will be taught at least partially in person? Will first year  business students be given opportunities to interact in person with classmates and professors?
The Office of the Registrar is currently updating SCU course availability to designate courses which are being taught online.  This process will happen throughout the summer prior to classes starting in the Fall.

Is BUSN70 better suited for in person experience? We hear a lot of good things about this course and hence the questions.
BUSN 70 has been taught both online and in person and both formats have been successful.   The BUSN 70 faculty will work to facilitate and create a sense of community for our first year business students.

Does the LSB curriculum require their specific course to be completed in a specific order so that concepts are learned in a specific order to build on in future courses?
Yes, many of the courses offered in the LSB core curriculum require sequenced learning.  For example, ECON 1 , ECON 2 and ECON 3 need to be completed in sequence and can’t be taken concurrently.

Will community college courses transfer should the student decide to stay home?
An incoming first year student would need to submit a gap year application to admission@scu.edu. If approved, a student could transfer approved community college course work, but would not be able to enroll full-time at any other college/university during any given term.

If it's a returning student, then students can bring in no more than 10 credits of general elective work.

Calculus Questions:

My daughter is currently taking a summer calc course, how different is this from a calc course for business students? I am wondering if she should wait to take this calc course at SCU?
The business applications that are included in the SCU course, while interesting for our business students, are not a requirement. For questions about a particular course, please contact Mary Shenouda-Williams in the Office of the Registrar to assist with an evaluation of the course and if it would be transferable to SCU.

Registration Questions:

In light of COVID and the mix of online and in-person courses, are first year students  permitted to take a gap year and start their first year in 2021 without having to reapply?
Gap year inquiries can be sent to admission@scu.edu.

Can you address the student options should they choose to start school in January as opposed to September?  OR if they forgo the whole year, what is the admissions process to defer a year?
Please direct these inquiries to admission@scu.edu.

For a transferred course, does the student get the credit and the grade transferred?
If a course is accepted for transfer, the units are transferred. Grades are not transferred.

If the student wants to explore transferring to the College Of Arts And Sciences for a different major who can we talk to for getting the right counseling?
The Drahmann Academic Advising Center at drahmanncenter@scu.edu and the Undergraduate Business Programs Office at ugbprograms@scu.edu

How many pre-enrolled classes will there be during the first year?
Each student will have one of the following as pre enrolled classes:
CTW (Critical, Thinking and Writing) I and II:  This is a two course sequence
C& I (Culture and Ideas):  This is a two course sequence
RTC (Religion, Theology and Culture):  This is one course

I'm wondering what the student misses out on if they choose online learning versus on campus learning for their first year?
Most first-year students who attend in person will be able to live in the residence halls, and meet other students and faculty in their residential communities. We expect to allow some socially distant, but in person, activities for students, although we are encouraging as much online interaction as possible. For those activities that are appropriate for outdoor space, our beautiful campus and typically temperate climate will allow students to gather (6ft apart) for many meetings as well.  We also expect to have in-person, reservable spaces for students to meet at an appropriate distance for small, group activities. In terms of academics, students attending on campus will have a chance to be in classes with some of the professors who see in-person teaching as most central to their courses.

Honors Program Questions:

Do students in the Honors Program have difficulty staying on track with the LSB curriculum?
No, honors students balance the university core and business curriculum with program requirements.

Housing Questions:
Housing Website: https://www.scu.edu/campus-life/housing/

For those first year students who had already selected roommates and are among the lucky ones to get a residence hall  room—will the school still consider assigning the residence hall  assignments with rooms next to or near each other?
In order to maximize the flexibility needed to place all students who qualify for fall term housing, we cannot commit to keeping suitemates, roommates, etc adjacent to one another.  However, once we understand how many students want to live on campus, we will be better able to ascertain if and where we can keep students close to their original assigned space.

If assigned a single room, would the student be allowed to use all the space however they see fit; bring bikes, workout gear (weights)?
Most of our spaces on campus are set up to accommodate at least two students, so your single-occupancy room will likely have at least two sets of furniture in it. We do not have the staff or storage space to remove excess furniture from rooms.  As such, there will not be a lot of extra room to bring large items such as furniture or workout bikes.

At what point would you make decisions to double rooms back up? Are you committing to the current living arrangements for the academic year?
Given the constantly evolving nature of this crisis, we do not have a timeframe for reverting back to standard occupancy.  As decisions are made, we will communicate early and widely to ensure that students have as much information as possible to plan.

If a student opts to take online class, will they be denied housing in January when things are back to normal?
We are not yet able to confirm what housing will be available in the winter or spring.  Given the constantly evolving nature of this crisis, we do not have a timeframe for reverting back to standard occupancy.  As decisions are made, we will communicate early and widely to ensure that students have as much information as possible to plan.

What is SCU's policy on campus residency if classes are online?  Does a first-year student have to come to campus?

In light of the current pandemic the University is suspending the residency requirement for one year. All new students, who wish to commute, are asked to complete the commuter form available through the housing application process. Santa Clara University will institute a two-year residency requirement beginning with the Class of 2025 (Entering fall 2021).

Will they be able to stay on campus even if it's all online?
Currently, based on county and state guidance, students will be able to live on campus even if all classes are held remotely.  This may change if the county or state issues different guidelines.

If a student decides to take classes online from home in the fall, will they be able to get housing starting in January if things return to normal?
We are not yet able to confirm what housing will be available in the winter or spring.  Given the constantly evolving nature of this crisis, we do not have a timeframe for reverting back to standard occupancy.  As decisions are made, we will communicate early and widely to ensure that students have as much information as possible to plan.

Do you know when students should arrive on campus?
Move-in for fall 2020 will be reviewed and restructured to ensure that physical distancing guidelines can be followed during the process. This will likely result in a longer move-in schedule that begins during the week prior to the start of classes. Please keep an eye out for additional information about move-in, including scheduling options, in August.

Will parents be allowed to help move into the residence halls?
Yes, students can have up to two adult family/friends to assist with their move but can only be within the residence hall during the assigned move-in time. Additional move-in information will be sent in August.

Student Life Questions:

What are plans for the students socially? How will they safely meet friends?   I fear that students will have so little interaction in person they will feel isolated.
The Center for Student Involvement staff will be hosting Question and Answer sessions to share responses to questions about opportunities for involvement at Santa Clara University.

Session Dates:
7/22 @ 3:30pm
7/29 @ 11am

When will the staggered move-in schedule be announced?
Move-in for fall 2020 will be reviewed and restructured to ensure that physical distancing guidelines can be followed during the process. This will likely result in a longer move-in schedule that begins during the week prior to the start of classes. Please keep an eye out for additional information about move-in, including scheduling options, in August.

Covid 19 Questions:

What is the risk management policy and insurance that the University has in case the student gets ill from the in-class schedule?
The Cowell Health Center is the University student health clinic on campus. The medical professionals in the Center have only one focus, the health and well being of all students on campus. Members of the Cowell Health Center have been heavily involved in the planning for the Fall. The University requires that all students maintain health insurance. There is a Student Health Insurance Plan that may be purchased or students may show coverage through other means (their parents, their work, etc.). We expect that health insurance will cover any Covid related illness that our community members may experience.

What happens if a student becomes ill with Coronavirus while living on campus?
They will be moved to a residence hall location set aside for quarantine and supported with delivered meals and other aid.

Will COVID testing be available on campus?
Yes, the university is working to secure COVID testing to be available on campus.

Will a 2 week quarantine occur for all students prior to results of the COVID 19 testing at the beginning of the year?
The University is working on its plans for the Fall and those plans may include some quarantine time for students.

Transportation to school - has there been any thought of chartering planes or buses, if there are enough students from an area?
At this point, no plane or bus chartering has been planned.

Tuition Questions:

When is tuition due for 2020 Fall? via SCU Pay Site?
Students will receive an email on the 1st of each month reminding them that a new billing statement is available to view in their eCampus portal. Students should set up their parents (or any other third party who may be paying the bill) as an Authorized User. This will allow parents to receive their own User ID and Password which they can use to log on to the SCU Pay Site to view and pay the bill. Once parents are set up as an Authorized User, they will also receive the reminder email on the 1st of each month so they don't have to remember to sign in and pay.

Bills are generated and available to view online on the 1st and the payment due date is always the 21st of the same month.

Due dates are:
August 21 (fall)
December 21 (winter)
March 21 (spring)

We encourage all students/parents to get in the habit of viewing the bill online every month (not just during the above months), just in case there are additional charges due during the other months (ie: Cowell Health Center co-pay fees, ACCESS Card charges, Library fines, etc.)

Parents can contact our OneStop Office with any questions. They are happy to assist! They can assist students with setting up their parents as Authorized Users, completing the FERPA Release and waiving the health insurance.
