  • Dr. Ling was interviewed by Mandarin Journal, KTSF Channel 26 TV

    Nam Ling was interviewed on the program, Mandarin Journal, broadcasted on Dec 12 on San Francisco and Silicon Valley Bay Area mainstream Chinese and Cantonese TV KTSF Channel 26.The interview lasted 30 minutes and was about his background, STEM education, leadership/jobs, students, advice to young people (his 3C principle). Watch the interview here. 

     

     

  • Bingxin Hou successfully defended her PhD Thesis and published a Journal Paper

    Congratulations to Ph.D. student Bingxin Hou, who has a paper, “A Fast Lightweight 3D Separable Convolutional Neural Network with Multi-Input Multi-Output for Moving Object Detection,” published by IEEE Access journal and successfully defended her PhD thesis, “Deep Learning-Based Low Complexity and High Efficiency Moving Object Detection” on Dec 2.

  • Dr. Ling appeared on KTSF Channel 26 TV News

    Dr. Nam Ling was on the San Francisco and Silicon Valley Bay Area mainstream Chinese and Cantonese TV News (KTSF Channel 26), broadcasted on Sep 30, discussing the new SCDI facilities and expressing his views on STEM education.

     

  • Dr. Ling appeared on World Journal (Newspaper)

    Dr. Nam Ling was featured on the front page of the Bay Area section of the U.S. mainstream Chinese newspaper, World Journal, on Oct. 13. The article presents the new SCDI STEM building and his views on the increasing demand for STEM talents, especially computer scientists and engineers.

     

Summer 2021
  • Dr. Ling and Dr. Liu received a new grant

    Dr. Nam Ling (PI) and Dr. Ying Liu (PI) have been awarded a $154,673 new grant, "Low Complexity and High Efficiency Image and Video Coding with Deep Learning on Heterogeneous Platforms," from Kwai, Inc. The project involves using deep generative adversarial network (GAN) and convolutional neural network (CNN) for image and video coding and moving object detection.

  • Dr. Ling appeared on Singtao Daily and Singtao TV

    Dr. Nam Ling shared his experience in education with Asian parents in Singtao Daily (a mainstream Chinese Newspapers in the U.S.) and Singtao TV (the TV station of Singtao Daily) on July 27. Watch his interview here.

Spring 2021
  • Dr. Ling will moderate APSIPA U.S. Local Chapter Panel on "The Future of Video Coding"

    Dr. Ling will moderate APSIPA U.S. Local Chapter Panel on "The Future of Video Coding." Panelists are leaders from the various video coding fields, ranging from video coding standards, visual quality, deep learning approaches, screen content coding, reinforcement learning, rate-control, video coding for machines, and more. The panel will discuss and debate on different future issues in video coding. 

Winter 2021
  • Dr. Ling and Dr. Liu elected to be Vice Chair and Secretary/Treasurer for APSIPA U.S. Chapter

    Dr. Nam Ling and Dr. Yuhong Liu were elected to serve as Vice Chair and Secretary/Treasurer, respectively, for the newly founded United States Chapter of the Asia-Pacific Signal and Information Processing Association (APSIPA U.S.Chapter). Both are founding members of the APSIPA U.S. Chapter. Find the website here.

  • Dr. Ling and Dr. Liu received a new grant

    Nam Ling (PI) and Ying Liu (Co-PI), “Low Complexity and High Efficiency Image and Video Processing with Neural Network on Heterogeneous Platforms,” US$150,873.00, Kwai, Inc., June 16, 2020 – June 15, 2021.

  • Bingxin Hou won first place (PhD category) at SCU Engineering Research Showcase

    Congratulations to Ph.D. student Bingxin Hou, who won first place (Ph.D. category) at the Santa Clara University School of Engineering Research Showcase, with her poster, “A Super-Fast Deep Model for Moving Object Detection,” Feb 28, 2020.  Our Ph.D. students presented posters there.

  • Dr. Ling published a book

    Nam Ling recently published a book, Travel the Holy Land, March 11, 2020, about sites in Israel and Jordan, their historical, spiritual, and touristic significance. During the initial release, it was ranked #1 under Amazon hot new releases in the travel pictorial reference books category, and #27 under Amazon best sellers in the travel pictorial reference books category.

  • Dr. Ling and Dr. Liu presented papers at APSIPA and seminars at Lanzhou University

    Dr. Nam Ling and Dr. Yuhong Liu presented papers at APSIPA’ 2019 and presented seminars at Lanzhou University, China, November 2019.

Summer 2019
  • Dr. Ling and former student/post-doc received Excellent Paper Award

    Dr. Nam Ling and former student/post-doc received an Excellent Paper Award for the paper, “Non-MPM Mode Coding for Intra Prediction in Video Coding,” at Umedia 2019 in Bali, Indonesia, August 6 – 9, 2019.
