Dear Friends of the School of Engineering,
These first five weeks of the Spring Quarter have seemed to fly by. Seniors have been busy finishing up their capstone projects as staff prepares for our 52nd Annual Senior Design Conference. I personally am looking forward to experiencing it in person for the first time.
Below you can watch a video that spotlights one of our Senior Design groups that is investigating the use of artificial intelligence in music therapy. Also, learn about the new Healthcare Innovation and Design minor offered. Read how the BioInnovation and Design Lab is working to improve people’s lives affected by dementia and Alzheimer’s, and so much more!
Wishing you all the best for the remaining quarter,
Elaine P. Scott, Ph.D.

A new minor in Healthcare Innovation and Design! SCU's new Healthcare Innovation and Design Minor educates and trains next generation leaders who will contribute to the effort in the design and development of technologies and services that will revolutionize areas of healthcare and medicine. More here.
Innovations in Dementia Care! Santa Clara is partnering with the Ferry Foundation to design solutions that enrich the quality of life for those living with dementia and Alzheimer's. Led by an interdisciplinary team of faculty mentors, students across a variety of disciplines at Santa Clara are currently being recruited to begin research, followed by “ideation sessions” to identify core problems in dementia care that could benefit from technology intervention. More here.
Order of the Engineer: The School of Engineering will hold its annual Order of the Engineer Ceremony in person on Thursday, June 2. Current seniors and graduate students are invited to participate as well as alumni/ae who may have not been able to in the past. View the SCU Engineering Order of the Engineer video to learn more about The Order. Register here by Friday, May 13.
Sukhmander Singh (Civil, Environmental and Sustainable Engineering), who has been at Santa Clara for 36 years, has been honored by having an endowed professorship named after him. Read about Professor Singh's remarkable life, his penchant for "monkey stories," and the qualities his fans suggest the first Singh Endowed Professor should have if they want to embody "the Spirit of Sukhi." View the story and a short video here.
Faculty Lightning Talks. The School of Engineering has added a new datablitz video. Checkout Yuhong Liu (Computer Science and Engineering) as she talks about "Trustworthy Computing" and how easy it is for malicious users to distribute disinformation or misinformation online through social media. Visit our YouTube playlist to watch.
Yuhong Liu, Yi Fang (both Computer Science and Engineering), and Subbu Vincent (Markkula Center) have received a $137,500 award from The Knight Foundation. These funds will support their project "Building a Live Chinese Language News Discussion Repository to Track and Combat Active Disinformation Campaigns." This project seeks to use popular news discussion sites in the Chinese American community to build a repository of actors, posts, categories, and behavioral patterns of disinformation operations targeting Chinese Americans around health and election issues. The repository will be a resource for mitigation efforts and will have insights from API footprints in social media platforms.
Seniors Xavi Anderhub, Uma Bahl, Betty Hou, and David Krakauer (Computer Science and Engineering) spotlight their Senior Design project, "AI Music-Based Emotional Regulation (AMBER)." Check out their video here. More project spotlights will be added to the playlist as we get closer to the Senior Design Conference. Make sure to subscribe to the SCU Engineering YouTube channel for updates.
Fulbright Award Finalist. David Diebold '20 (Bioengineering) has been selected to receive a Fulbright Award to conduct independent research in Ghana. David is Santa Clara's sixth semi-finalist to be selected for an award this cycle and will represent SCU across the globe. Congratulations, David!
