Lauren Serfas '20 (bioengineering), Global Social Benefit Fellow at Miller Center for Social Entrepreneurship, was one of three students interviewed by Fr. Kevin O'Brien at the Miller Center's recent Action Research with a Mission 2019 Student Showcase. As a Fellow, Lauren traveled to Kenya working with the social enterprise, Eggpreneur. The students reflect on the transformative power of Jesuit education and their experiences as Fellows at the 16:40 mark of this video.

Two groups of Civil, Environmental, and Sustainable Engineering first-year students donned hard hats and became the first students to tour SCU’s new Sobrato Campus for Discovery and Innovation, slated for completion in fall, 2021! Allan Báez (Frugal Innovation Hub) was invited and sponsored to implement a Frugal Innovation Workshop for more than 250 students of IBERO Leon University in Leon, Mexico. The workshop was part of the annual IDEAT conference and it was implemented in partnership with the Latin-America Frugal Innovation Network (a Frugal Innovation Hub initiative).

Chris Kitts (mechanical engineering) has been reappointed to a new 3-year term as an Adjunct Research Engineer at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, providing him with Principal Investigator status at MBARI and use of research vessels, test tanks, and other resources. Kitts has collaborated with MBARI for nearly 20 years; several of the marine robots developed in the RSL were designed in collaboration with MBARI scientists and engineers.

Nam Ling (computer science and engineering) with Zhouye Gu (Apple), Chen-Xiong Zhang and Jianhua Zheng (both HiSilicon/FutureWei Technologies) were awarded a U.S. Patent, "System and method for estimating view synthesis distortion," U.S. Patent Publication Number US10326995B2, on June 18, 2019. Saying Goodbye to Samiha Mourad: A visionary, mentor, prolific researcher, innovative academician, and respected colleague and friend, Samiha Mourad, Professor Emeritus of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, passed away in November, 2019. Read about her lasting contributions to the School of Engineering .

Godfrey Mungal (mechanical engineering) will serve on the Advisory Committee of the 20th International Symposium on Applications of Laser and Imaging Techniques to Fluid Mechanics to be held in Lisbon, Portugal, July 13-16, 2020. Advisory Committee members are a group of subject specialists who guide the Organizing Committee on the selection of papers for the conference.
