Guide for Disabilities Center (ENGR 110, Spring 2012)

Advisor: Shoba Krishnan

Students designed an RFID system that would enable a developmentally disabled or sight-impaired person to independently navigate a room.  The blind or mentally disabled lose independence because they lack the mental or physical capabilities to maneuver a room by themselves and may require help from a family member, nurse, or other aid.  Students developed a device using RFID tag locators combined with an audio playback device to help a person figure out where they were in a room. The tags are placed at pre-defined locations around a room, and as the person wearing the audio reader nears one of the tags, the audio informs them of their location in the room.
