Model Catholic Health Care Ethics Policies

Many hospitals that operate within the Catholic tradition develop polices to address ethically challenging issues. While these policies must be developed in concert with the Ethical and Religious Directives produced by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, it can be difficult to find which Directives apply to particular sections of policies. For 20 years, the Ethics Center has worked with Catholic hospitals to develop such policies, including the following model policies, which include preambles consistent with Catholic teaching as well as specific references to appropriate Directives. These documents cover topics that can be particularly difficult to address and may be helpful to anyone revising policies or developing them anew. They are offered here as examples of good practice and appropriate for use in Catholic health care settings.
