Professor of Practice in Marketing Charles Byers Head Shot

Charles Byers : Oakland Hires Pricey PR After Deadly Warehouse Fire : NBC

Professor of Marketing Charles Byers was quoted in NBC’s online story about why the city of Oakland hired a pricey public relations firm in the wake of a deadly warehouse fire.

Marketing Professor Charles Byers weighed in on the City of Oakland’s decision to hire a pricey public relations firm in the wake of the city’s tragic and deadly warehouse fire. While some criticized the decision, calling it a misappropriation of public funds, Professor Byers argued that it was ultimately intended to protect the taxpayers.

An excerpt from the article:
“It is clearly reasonable in terms of value,” said Charles Byers, a public relations professor at Santa Clara University with more than 40 years of experience in the industry. Byers, who is not affiliated with The Press Shop, reviewed the scope of services of the deal before speaking with the Investigative Unit.

“What this engagement is designed to do is to protect the city from unwarranted liability… and ultimately protecting you, the taxpayer, from that bill,” Byers said. “This is the use of public relations to protect you.”
