Family/ Parent Questions and Answers from the Leavey School of Business July 10th Webinar

Family/ Parent Q&A from the Leavey School of Business July 10th Webinar

Registration Questions:

Assuming in-person classes will be taking place, how large is each Business 70 class (how many total are there) if all first year  undergraduate business students are required to take this course?
We will be offering 17 sections of BUSN 70 in the Fall.  We anticipate each class to be between 22- 28 students.  Our incoming first year students in the LSB is 415.

If a student wants to take a 5th class, is it relatively easy to get approval for 20 units? Or does 5th class need to be up to 3 units for 19 unit max?
Below is information about overloading for future quarters.  We do not allow first year students to overload in their first quarter.

“Overloading” is a term that we use at SCU. Students with a CUM GPA of 3.3 and above can overload (up to 25 units) starting at 8:30 a.m. the first day of the quarter on ecampus. An additional fractional, 1 or 2 unit class can be added via a submitted "add" form which can be accessed  on the Office of the Registrar website under "forms”.  Students requiring permission to add overload units must obtain the signature of a University Adviser at the Drahmann Advising Center on the ‘Permission for Unit Overload Form’ and submit that form to the Enrollment Service Center located in the Admission and Enrollment Service Building before the late registration deadline. If the class is closed, the instructor’s signature or permission number is required. Exceptions to exceed maximum units are rare. Students must contact Drahmann Center if they wish to be reviewed for an exception.

Will students be informed during registration which classes are on line?
Students will not be informed during registration which classes are online. We will release this information in the near future.

Is there any possibility of fully online classes this quarter for international students given the current situations?
For international student questions, please contact the Global Engagement Office.   You will find a listing of staff who can assist here.

Will classes fill quicker since there will be fewer students per class?  Will more class times be added to accommodate this? Especially for students in later orientation sessions, will there be challenges getting the classes they need.
We will accommodate all students in classes for each registration/orientation session.

If a student wants in-person, but registers in a class with a teacher that decides to not be in-person, can the student transfer out of that class to an in-person class?
In the fall, some “in person” course will be offered and modified to the extent that we are permitted by local and state regulations. If there is space during  open enrollment,  students can switch courses.     However,  we do have limited space in each course. All pre-enrolled courses  cannot be swapped or changed.

If a student is pre registered into a Religion class, does that mean they cannot also take the core curriculum writing class?
No, all students are required to take the Critical, Thinking and Writing course (CTW).  If your student is not pre-registered into this course for fall, they will work to select a CTW course to start in winter quarter.

Where can my student find their pre-enrolled class?
Each student will receive an email one business day before their orientation session with their pre-enrolled course.

If the student will take full on-line courses this fall outside of the U.S will his/her course planning/selection be different?
At this time, all students will participate in the same course selection process.

Would you consider more on-line options that fit students not in the U.S. time zone?
The University is implementing on-line courses that start early and end late in Pacific Time, as well as all times in-between.  In addition, many faculty are implementing asynchronous components throughout online courses that may be completed by students at any time.

Where can we look up the course catalog to find out the number of credits each class is worth?
1). Course availability:  Have your student  go to course avail and type in a class- such as BUSN 70.  Once the classes are listed, click on the course #.  The course # is a 5 digit number listed about the course title.  As an example:  18935 for BUSN 70.  This will bring you to information about the course where credits are listed.   A typical lower division course is 4 units.

2) SCU Bulletin can be found here.   You can go to each department and locate course descriptions and units. The LSB is Chapter 4.

Orientation Questions:

When will my student have a meeting with an advisor to recommend what courses he should be registering for?
All students will meet with an advisor on the day of their orientation/registration. They will meet and review their schedule with 3 other students and an advisor.  The advisor will stay with them until they complete the registration process.

Is there a schedule for the orientation (perhaps my student already has it but i don't know!); that is, are there more activities other than meeting with their advisor and choosing classes?
The SCU Orientation team will be sending out weekly newsletters to students about upcoming events and deadlines. They also update their website with information. You can go to scu.edu/orientation or emails orientations@scu.edu

Is there a schedule in place for Welcome Weekend?
The SCU Orientation team will be sending out weekly newsletters to students about upcoming events and deadlines. They also update their website with information. You can go to scu.edu/orientation or emails orientations@scu.edu

Peer Advising Questions:

Can you please give more clarity on how the Peer Advisor will connect with our student? Will the Peer Advisor reach out with a scheduled appointment to connect, as opposed to simply “suggesting” contact? Our  student would really benefit from creating a relationship with a peer advisor, and would have been comfortable to do so at a Live Orientation event, but will be very hesitant, probably even resistant to reach out online unless it was a scheduled appointment or on his “Required Checklist” to do so.

Our peer advisors are  trained and knowledgeable about LSB requirements, and can show first year students how to use Santa Clara's many advising resources and materials, especially in their first year.

We have created a series of check-ins with incoming students. During the summer, we have two summer peer advisors who reach out a week prior to your student’s orientation date with a drop in advising hours for your student to attend. They also can schedule individual appointments if needed.

During the academic year, each incoming student is assigned a peer advisor who will connect with them prior to coming to SCU and will connect with them during the first couple of weeks of class in the Fall. All first year LSB students will have a mandatory advising appointment with their peer advisor in the fall quarter. In the winter quarter, we will be hosting drop in hours for students to attend.  In the spring,  we host mandatory advising appointments to course plan with students.

Our LSB peer advisors are also great conversation partners in talking about life as a student at SCU and know about the variety of resources available at SCU to help any student.

Advanced Placement (AP) Questions:

AP Test results come out next week. When do we know what subjects, if any, will be accepted by SCU?

The subjects that SCU accepts are listed in the University Bulletin under Advance Placement.  Here is the link.  https://www.scu.edu/bulletin/undergraduate/chapter-8/AcademicCreditEvaluation.html

Math/Calculus Questions:

What is your policy for math credits (calc) for IB?
For the IB Math exam SCU only provides elective credit.  The chart for test scores and equivalencies can be found here.

My student took the math placement test but didn't take it serious and forgot a lot of stuff (didn't review before taking the test) and thought they could repeat it again and rushed it in 30 minutes - I assume the student will  take Math 9 (repeat precalculus which he had in junior year as he took AP statistics in senior year) before they move onto  Math 30 and 31?  Is Math 30 offered in winter session and 31 in spring session if he is able to take Math 9 in fall quarter?
Yes, if the CRE indicated he should register for Math 9, then this is the course he should enroll in.   Math 9 is offered in Fall and Winter.  Math 30 and 31 are offered every quarter.

Since my student has their orientation  before they finds out  APCalc results, is it risky that the student might be placed in a math class that might be too difficult or too easy?
If the  AP results place the student in a higher class, it’s likely that they  can be placed in the right class for fall.  Have the student contact the Office of the Registrar if this happens.

Foreign Language Requirement/ Placement Process Questions:

My student took the language placement test some time ago.  When will the results be available?
Placement recommendations are generally emailed to the student SCU email address no later than 14 business days after completing their skills assessment, though they may be available sooner.

Do students have to take language placement?   YES, it is mandatory.

Do students have to take a language placement test even if they are planning on taking a level one class?
Yes, ALL students must complete the language placement process PRIOR TO REGISTERING for their first language course at SCU. Students may not self-place.

For more information on the language placement process, we have developed the following FAQ to help students: https://www.scu.edu/modernlanguages/student-resources/placement--proficiency-testing/language-placement-process-faqs/

General Leavey School of Business Questions:

The Family/Parent pre-recorded video refers frequently to visits/presentations/classes from current local Silicon Valley professionals in classrooms. With potential online classes, social distancing requirements and general reluctance to attend group gatherings do you anticipate that this type of interaction will be diminished or impossible?
No, during the Spring quarter, many of these visits and presentations were conducted on Zoom and were very successful.

How big is the First Year LSB class?  Our incoming first year students in the LSB is 415.

Residential Learning Community (RLC) Questions:

My student’s pre enrolled class is Religion, which RLC does that correspond to?  What RLC are linked to the Religion Core Class?
Four RLCs have an RTC course linked to them. They are:
TESP 4  MWF 9:15-10:20am Section:  18826
TESP 16 MWF 1:00-2:05pm Section:  19597
SCTR 19 TR 10:20am-12:00pm Section: 18776
RSOC 9 MWF 11:45am-12:50pm Section: 18752

These communities are CO (Communitas), LO (Loyola), MP (Modern Perspectives), and UN (Unity).  That last course is a special one that the Faculty Director of the Unity RLC teaches for the Imagine community within Unity.

How do RLCs work in relation to assigned residence halls,  i.e. do you still get your preferred RLC if you don’t get the associated residence hall?
There is a one-to-one correspondence between hall and RLC.  CyPhi is housed in Swig Hall, Modern Perspectives in Dunne Hall, and so on. Although see the COVID-related answer below.

Is the student guaranteed the RLC of choice?
No. However, the Housing staff do the best they can to give every student one of their top preferences.  In addition, when more students list a certain RLC as their top preference than there are spaces in the community, students are randomly selected - except for care to ensure the right number of women and men are selected.

As a parent, I am confused about the how the RLCs are connected with the residence hall  and and residence hall  selection, especially now with Covid further affecting residence hall room allocation -

- For example our incoming Leavey student has chosen the SWIG  as a first choice, and the SWAN RLC (Students Wild About Nature). The priority is to be in the SWAN RLC no matter which dorm my student is placed in. Can my student be in SWAN, no matter the residence?

Students assigned to SWAN were selected from those who listed SWAN as a priority and also SWIG as their top Housing preference. Due to space limitations, however, not all such students could be accommodated. SWAN is housed on a specific floor within Swig Hall, so only students on that floor are members of the SWAN community. However, SWAN is integrally connected with Santa Clara's Into the Wild club, which is focused on exploring California through activities such as hiking, backpacking, snow camping, rock climbing, kayaking, rafting, and surfing, and all students are welcome to join the club.

The Housing folks try to place every student in their top choice for housing. When more students ask for a particular hall/community than there are spaces, the correct balance of men and women is selected randomly, and Housing then tries to place those not selected in their second choice.

Although a final decision is still pending, it is almost a certainty that the halls and the RLCs will not look like they normally would. For example, it is likely that all residence halls will be single occupancy, which means that students may not live in the hall associated with their RLC. In addition, living arrangements in halls with common bathrooms may be adjusted to accommodate the maximum number of students who can use a bathroom facility at the same time, and living arrangements in the taller buildings may be adjusted to accommodate the maximum number of students that can use an elevator at the same time.

Housing/ Residential Life Questions:

When does  a student find out when they move on campus?  Or what residence hall they will be in ?  Or who will be their roommate?
For all those who have submitted a housing application, information regarding housing will be shared on Wednesday, July 15th.

Currently, the Housing Office is planning to confirm housing assignments in mid-August. The move-in process is still being worked on, as county and state regulations continue to shift due to COVID 19. It is likely that the move-in process will be a lengthy one. Once more details are solidified, information will be shared on the Housing website.

Do we need to purchase a printer for their residence hall  room?
No you do not need a printer in the residence hall room. In Lucas Hall, the Dukes Center has printers students can use.

Will fewer students be allowed on-campus, student housing this year due to COVID 19 and, if so, will first year students be given any kind of priority?
There will be a reduction of students living on campus. Incoming first-year students will be among the priority groups for housing. Additional information will be sent via emails expected to be sent out on July 15 and July 16.

Are you expecting to house one student per room?
Currently we are planning to house students in single rooms.

When will the students get their access cards?
This year we are moving towards mobile credentialing. Please visit the ACCESS Card Office for more information.

Student Involvement Questions:

How does a student  learn about clubs on campus?
Here is the link to the LSB Undergraduate Student Associations webpage

https://www.scu.edu/business/undergraduates/community/student-organizations/

University Clubs:  Explore Center for Student Involvement website for information on all clubs and organizations:  Search Directory of RSOs (Registered Student Organizations).  Reach out to student leaders of the groups

Technology/ Computer Questions:

Does my student need a laptop with specific requirements?
Both PC/ Mac are fine for business school students.

Do we need to purchase a printer for their residence hall  room?
No you do not need a printer in the residence hall room.  In Lucas Hall, the Dukes Service Center has printers students can use.

Are you using Microsoft Office 365 or Google Docs for collaboration tools?
As shared in our session, the students had experienced and were using Google Docs.

Covid 19 Questions:

How does the school plan on adapting to the State/City restrictions for Covid-19?
The University will align with county, state and CDC guidelines and remain in full compliance with Santa Clara County Health regulations.

If classes are disrupted / or go online / dorms vacated and students sent home / or if a student is quarantined with or without symptoms / or hospitalized  - will there be an ability to adjust / or lower course load midstream without LSB pathway consequences going forward?
The University will be sensitive to the many adjustments that might need to be made regarding disruption from the pandemic.

What is the latest update and expectation with regard to --will fall classes be in person vs online vs hybrid due to COVID 19?
Please see the following website for assistance:  Prepared SCU

If the fall classes will be in person, will school have them wear masks?  How many students will be in one classroom? So, EVERY Student will wear a mask, is that correct?
Yes, every faculty, student and staff will be expected to wear masks in public spaces including class rooms.

Is there an action plan in the event a student in the residence hall  tests positive/gets sick? Can they stay in the residence hall if they need to quarantine?  What will trigger the need to isolate?
The University is currently working on these procedures.  Residence hall rooms are being set aside for quarantine and isolation.

Can you go into detail on what is the action plan? Also how will parents get notified? Since students are over 18, how will parents be notified if students are sent to a hospital. Can you direct us to who contact at the school?
The University is working on the quarantine/isolation procedures and notification.  The Office of Student Life would help guide families to the appropriate individuals as needed.

Won’t all classes have to transition online for the week after thanksgiving?
Yes, all classes will transition to online for the week after thanksgiving and finals week.

Does SCU have a residency requirement and will it be enforced for fall 2020 enrollment?
In light of the current pandemic the University is suspending this requirement for one year.  All new students, who wish to commute, are asked to complete the commuter form available through the housing application process.  Santa Clara University will institute a two-year residency requirement beginning with the Class of 2025 (Entering fall 2021).  So no, students are not required to live on campus.

If dining will have modified hours and capacity, will students have increased access to food storage/ preparation facilities?
Dining hours will continue to ensure sufficient access to food in Benson Memorial 7 days a week.  The capacity is being modified to accommodate fewer students living in residence halls but will not reduce a student's ability to have their dining needs met by visiting Mission Bakery, Marketplace or the Cellar Market.

For Dining, I am really concerned about safety.
Bon Appetit Management Company and Santa Clara University are implementing protocols to ensure the safety of workers, students and food.  These protocols align with county, state and CDC guidelines and remain in full compliance with Santa Clara County Health regulations.

Tuition Questions:

When are tuition payments due?
Due dates are:
August 21 (fall)
December 21 (winter)
March 21 (spring)

For tuition and payment does the school email a bill or I am supposed to remember when to sign on and pay? What are the dates we pay exactly throughout the year?

Students will receive an email on the 1st of each month reminding them that a new billing statement is available to view in their eCampus portal. Students should set up their parents (or any other third party who may be paying the bill) as an Authorized User, which will allow parents to receive their own User ID and Password which they can use to log on to the SCU Pay Site to view and pay the bill. Once parents are set up as an Authorized User, they will also receive the reminder email on the 1st of each month so they don't have to remember to sign in and pay.

Bills are generated and available to view online on the 1st and the payment due date is always the 21st of the same month.

Due dates are:
August 21 (fall)
December 21 (winter)
March 21 (spring)

We encourage all students/parents to get in the habit of viewing the bill online every month (not just during the above months), just in case there are additional charges due during the other months (ie: Cowell Health Center co-pay fees, ACCESS Card charges, Library fines, etc.)

Parents can contact our OneStop Office with any questions. They are happy to assist! They can assist students with setting up their parents as Authorized Users, completing the FERPA Release and waiving the health insurance.

Contact info is here: 408-551-1000 or onestop@scu.edu M-F 9:00am-4:00pm

University Honors Program (UHP) Questions:

Is the Honors Program Registration different in any way for LSB?
A UHP student registers in the same way whether you are in business, engineering, or arts and sciences.  Honors students register in the first 3 groups of each orientation day and are pre-enrolled in an honors version of CTW and C&I.  Some honors students have both in winter and spring  so they might not see them on a fall schedule.  Other than their pre-enrolled classes honors students are free to take whatever they want in fall (and every other quarter).  The UHP program provides  them with a few suggestions, but none are mandatory.  They also have a list of our requirements, but they have 4 years to fulfill them.
