Ethics Bowl

First time California team holds this distinction

Congratulations to the SCU Ethics Bowl Team, which placed fourth in last weekend’s national Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl competition at the annual meeting of the Association of Practical and Professional Ethics in Dallas, Texas. This is the first time a team from California has made it to the semifinals.  West Point, the team that SCU lost to by a 2-1 vote in the semifinals, went on to win the competition. The competition begins with 11 regional bowls, attended by hundreds of college students from the United States and Canada. Teams prepare to address cases prepared by APPE ethics faculty, researchers, and professionals, raising topical issues in business and professional ethics, personal relationships, and social and political affairs.

According to the APPE, teams are judged on how well they: understand the facts of the case, articulate the ethical principles involved in the case, present an effective argument on how the case should be resolved, and respond effectively to challenges put forth by the opposing team as well as the panel of expert judges.

Students who competed at nationals were Alex Arnold, Derek Sikkema, Leilan Nishi, Evan Meyer, and Jonathan Jaworski. Other students who participated in Ethics Bowl this year, including team practices and the team’s third place finish at the Regional Competition were: Matti Masden, Jack DuBois, Jamie Ferris, Kaitlin Coltin, Miles Elliott, Amanda Schiavonne, Nita Sridharan, Patrick Finney, and John Daugherty. Coaching the team were Erick Ramirez, assistant professor of philosophy; Brian Green, assistant director of campus ethics at the Ethics Center and adjunct lecturer in engineering; and Patrick Coutermarch, business ethics program coordinator at the Ethics Center.

The Ethics Center is pleased to co-sponsor the Ethics Bowl team each year. Kudos to everyone who participated!
