Markkula Center for Applied Ethics

Free Speech and Civil Discourse Series

The freedom to speak, the duty to listen, the goal of community

This academic year, the Ethics Center will focus on the theme of freedom of speech and civil discourse: The Freedom to Speak, the Duty to Listen, the Goal of Community. We are exploring the theme through public events, the work of a team of undergraduate Hackworth Fellows, and the provision of educational materials about key, contested ethical issues related to it. Each quarter will focus on a particular aspect of this theme, with discussion and participation encouraged. A unique link on our website will feature related events, blog posts, resources, and more. Upcoming events of interest include an October 2 presentation on free speech at universities, featuring former UC Berkeley Chancellor Nicholas Dirks. For more information, view our website.
