PWR - People's Wine Revolution

Pairing great wines with business know-how is a plan for sustained success

Owners/Founders: Matt Reid & Marcy Webb

Location: Calistoga, California, USA

Business description: This husband-and-wife team produce about 700 cases of wine each year. Owning neither vineyard nor winery, Matt and Marcy seek out excellent growers and custom crush at a nearby winery. They currently produce a Zinfandel from the CCOF-Organic Poor Ranch outside of Hopland, in Mendocino County, which was first planted in the 1880s, a Viognier from the CWSA-certified sustainable Salem Ranch in Sonoma's Dry Creek Valley, and a Petite Sirah from the Oberti Vineyard in Suisun Valley. They also offer Syrah from both Bennett Valley (Sonoma) and Yountville (Napa), and minuscule quantities of a Cabernet Sauvignon from high above the renowned To-Kalon vineyard in Oakville (Napa Valley).

How it got started: After Matt finished the Viticulture & Enolgy M.S. program at UC-Davis, they moved to Napa to build a résumé, not intending to stay. Their plans changed when they fell in love with Calistoga and came to know the great community of Napa Valley. The only problem Matt and Marcy faced was the high prices of the wines they were producing. They want friends, family, everyone to enjoy the wines they produce, so the couple created PWR to produce great wines that everyone can afford.

How the My Own Business Institute course helped: “We knew a lot about making wine, but not much about creating, let alone running, a business. Several friends had stressed the importance of having a business plan—mostly due to their bad experiences not having one—but we did not know what a business plan should entail. The courses from My Own Business Institute were extremely helpful. Even the layout of the website is helpful in giving an overview of all the things that go into creating a successful business. We also appreciated the outside referrals, e.g., to the SBA, in the Business Resources section. In fact, it's probably about time I go back for a refresher!” -Matt Reid
