How to Know if the Evening MBA is Right for You

If you’re a mid- to upper-level professional plotting your next career move, then an Evening MBA is the perfect place to start. An MBA is a versatile degree that helps candidates develop a skill set with broad applications beyond a particular area of expertise. Whether you want to move up in your current position with your company or pursue other career options, earning an MBA can open doors you hadn’t anticipated.

  • At your current employer: People with MBAs and related graduate degrees in business report getting more promotions than those without an advanced degree.2 In some cases, getting an MBA may be even considered a prerequisite to advance into management roles.
  • With a new employer: An MBA will make your resumé stand out, especially if you earn your MBA from a highly ranked university with a respected business school. The number of employers looking to hire candidates with MBAs is on the rise, and an MBA can qualify you for positions with greater responsibility, potentially doubling your current salary.3

What an MBA Can Give You

Pursuing an MBA can open up more opportunities than you previously imagined. Its benefits and uses are tangible and multifaceted; trained in several areas of business, you’ll be able to wield your knowledge and provide value almost anywhere. The experience, skills and network you gain from the degree can serve you well and provide a springboard for your next big step.

While the upfront cost might be intimidating for some, 9-in-10 alumni report a positive return-on-investment (ROI) from their graduate business education, according to a 2021 GMAC survey.1 Your job title and salary can vary between industries, but here are some examples of career upgrades that just two years of MBA evening classes can create.

Frequently Asked Questions

On all accounts, an Evening MBA offers the same progressive course content, one-on-one faculty support and exceptional professional benefits as a traditional on-campus degree, but with MBA night classes to fit your work schedule. Classes generally meet twice per week, beginning around 5:30 p.m. and ending around 9:30 p.m., for 10 weeks.

Technically speaking, an Evening MBA is a part-time MBA; it’s a graduate degree that you complete in increments and at a slower pace than a full-time MBA. This allows students to continue working and gathering income while earning their degree. However, as the name states, the evening program only offers MBA night classes so that working professionals can attend after their regular work hours.

Since the Evening MBA program at SCU Leavey covers the same material as a traditional MBA, you’ll be able to enjoy the same personal and professional benefits that a full-time or on-campus degree provides. That includes deeper and more dynamic skills, an expanded professional network, and a more modern and global business perspective. Then, you can leverage your new credentials and advanced knowledge to advocate for a promotion, earn a new job title, or pivot into a different career path.

Yes, SCU Leavey also offers an Online MBA and Executive MBA program. The Online MBA, ranked the No. 3 Best Online MBA by Poets&Quants, covers the exact same material as our Evening MBA, but can be completed in as little as two years from wherever you prefer.2 The Executive MBA is designed for deeply experienced, senior professionals, and thus has a slightly different curriculum that focuses on leadership and management.

Leavey Alumni Pathway for the Evening MBA Program

The Leavey School of Business is proud to offer a preferred and expedited admissions pathway for alumni who qualify. Students who have graduated from the Leavey School of Business with a 3.0 cumulative GPA or higher or SCU alumni who have earned a STEM degree with a 2.5 cumulative GPA or higher will be waived of the GMAT/GRE requirement for the Evening MBA and fast-tracked through the admissions process.

Evening MBA Curriculum

Our Evening MBA program curriculum consists of core courses and electives in various disciplines such as accounting, finance, marketing, management, economics and operations. The classes are not only taught by full-time professors but also by practitioners who blend theory with practice. The core curriculum provides holistic knowledge of different disciplines that enable students to understand how businesses are managed and operated. Hence, the students are able to build core management skills and then move on to specialized electives that reflect their areas of interest. The classes utilize theory along with practical, case-based lessons and collaborative learning models to facilitate practical learning.

Schedules

During each quarter (fall, winter, spring and summer), MBA evening classes generally meet twice per week (either Mondays and Wednesdays, or Tuesdays and Thursdays) for 10 weeks for 95 minutes per session (5:45-7:20 p.m. and 7:35-9:10 p.m.). Two-unit courses generally meet twice per week for five weeks covering the first or second half of a quarter. One-unit courses generally meet once per week for five weeks covering the first or second half of a quarter. In all quarters, final exam periods are two hours.

Curriculum Outline

The Santa Clara MBA curriculum consists of 70 units across 14 core courses (42 units), one required elective (2 units), and 26 additional units of free electives. While entering students are recommended a particular schedule for their first year, there is considerable flexibility in the order in which courses are taken (with the caveat that all prerequisites must be satisfied before enrolling in a particular course). Math analysis/calculus and basic statistics proficiency is expected when entering the MBA program.

MBA in DSBA is STEM Certified

The new designation certifies the Data Science and Business Analytics curriculum as a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics program by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and reflects a curricular focus on business skills with an emphasis on STEM applications. International students in the DSBA program who are on an F-1 visa will now be able to work in the U.S. for up to three years following graduation under the Optional Practical Training (OPT) program.
