Christina Au: Finding Opportunities in Downtown San José: Inside and Outside of the Office!

Christina Au

As the Marketing and Communications Intern for the City of San José Office of Economic Development, I’ve gained a deeper understanding of not only marketing and communications, but also the Downtown San José community and the programs and initiatives that are put in place to support small businesses. In just one month I’ve really enjoyed how although there are some routine tasks I do every week, almost everyday there is something new that I work on and learn. Something that truly surprised me was how fast I was integrated into the team and treated like a real employee. During my second day on the job, I was asked to write a blog that would be published on the OED’s website about Manufacturing Week 2023 in San José. I was shocked and excited for the opportunity, and I am grateful for this early experience because I was able to work more closely with others on the team and learn more about the OED’s work in the community beyond supporting small businesses.

My supervisor has provided me with many opportunities for learning such as inviting me to sit in on meetings to gain greater insights into the behind the scenes work and conversations of some of the projects I do. Through working on the City’s social media posts, blog posts, e-newsletters, and updating their website, I’ve learned more about communicating with the public and creating engagement. It is rewarding to see small businesses engaging with our social media posts that feature them. In the short time that I’ve worked with the OED, it is extremely fulfilling to see how the work I am doing has immediate impacts.

At the OED, I’m grateful to not only be able to improve my marketing and communications skills, but also to connect with and learn more about Downtown San José. I’ve gained a deeper understanding of the OED’s efforts to market the business neighborhoods in Downtown San José and to help the community flourish. Before working in Downtown, I was unaware of its vibrant community. Working on wide-reaching marketing campaigns such as Holiday San José, that advertises restaurants and attractions, has already motivated me to explore Downtown and its business neighborhoods more outside of work. I hope to spread this excitement of finding new places and things to do with the greater community, especially here at Santa Clara University. Students and families may often forget about or are completely unaware of the many exciting opportunities and activities that are just within reach! As my internship progresses, I am excited to continue my work with the OED and to explore Downtown and engage with its community even more.
