Open University
The Open University Program is a non-degree program limited to 16 units with options to apply for an M.S. degree.
Engineers who wish to update their skills or learn new technologies without pursuing a specific degree may enroll in the School of Engineering’s Open University program.
Open University allows the students to:
- Examine a field of study before enrolling in a degree program
- Enhance your professional training
- Attend on a regular or nonconsecutive basis, depending on your own needs
- Get a head start by enrolling in classes while waiting for admission/transfer to a degree program
Transfer to a Degree Program:
If you would like to apply to a degree program later on, you will need to follow the same procedures required of the degree-seeking applicants, except that you will not need to pay the application fee again. The general GRE test requirement for admission to the master's degree program can be waived if the following two conditions are satisfied:
- The student has completed a set of required courses in the department to which they are applying.
- The student has achieved a GPA of 3.5 or above in these courses.
PLEASE NOTE: Official transcripts will still be required as part of the admissions process.
In general, up to 16 units taken in the Open University program can be transferred into the M.S. program. However, students who wish to do so should make sure that these courses conform to the departmental requirements in their chosen area of specialization.
Computer Science and Engineering is not available for the Open University Program.
International Student Requirements
In addition to the requirements listed under "Admissions Requirements", you must also submit your English Proficiency Scores and your International Evaluation Report.
English Proficiency Scores
- TOEFL, IELTS scores are required of all applicants whose first language is not English (even if the applicant is a U.S. citizen) or if you do not have a degree awarded by a U.S. university/college.
- Minimum TOEFL score: IBT/79-80 or CBT: 213 (Institutional Code: 4851)
- Minimum IELTS score: 6.5
- Minimum Duolingo score: 105 to 110
This requirement is waived if you earned a degree in Australia, Anglophone Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, or the United States within the last 4 years, where the sole instruction was English (if so, an official electronic transcript from the university/college must be sent to gradengineeradmissions@scu.edu in order to waive this requirement).
International Evaluation Report
All applicants who hold a degree from outside of the United States are required to have their official transcripts evaluated either by SpanTran, WES, or ECE:
- SpanTran - SpanTran is our recommended international transcript evaluation service. They have created a custom application for Santa Clara’s Engineering School that will make sure you select the right kind of evaluation at a discounted rate.
- We require a detailed report which includes course-by-course, cumulative GPA, and U.S. degree equivalency.
- SpanTran will attach your transcripts to the evaluation report.
- To use SpanTran's evaluation service, start your evaluation request form here
- WES evaluations (World Education Services)
- We require ICAP version, course-by-course, cumulative GPA, and U.S degree equivalency.
- WES will attach your transcripts to the evaluation report.
- Do not send us your international transcripts; WES will send us your official transcript with your evaluation.

Frequently Asked Questions
For any additional questions, please reach out to our admissions team at gradengineeradmissions@scu.edu.
How long do the MS engineering programs take?
Most full‑time students finish in 1.5–2 years (6–8 quarters). Part-time options may extend the timeline depending on course load.
Can I transfer graduate credits from other institutions?
Transfer credit is permitted for elective courses in your major up to 6 units. Note that the 4 units of Graduate Core courses cannot be transferred
Is a dual BS/MS program available?
Yes! SCU offers a 5‑year combined BS/MS program, allowing undergrads to begin graduate coursework in their senior year
When are classes scheduled?
Graduate classes are offered in the evenings and mornings during weekdays, to accommodate working professionals. Additional sections may be offered in the 9-5 time frame, and some special topics on weekends.
What are the tuition and funding options?
Current tuition rate is $1254/unit.
Federal Loans: Apply via FAFSA (SCU code 001326). Dept. Scholarships: Awarded selectively by academic departments.
Students may also apply for positions as Teaching Assistants (TAs) or graders. Research assistantships are also available for students interested in working with faculty on funded projects.
Reach out to our team at gradengineeradmissions@scu.edu for more information.
Can I enroll in graduate courses if I haven’t taken classes recently?
Yes, returning students who last took graduate classes years ago may re-enroll, subject to admission review.
Do you need to have a technical background to apply to certain MS programs?
Yes, applicants must demonstrate proficiency in a relevant technical domain. For example, CSE applicants lacking core preparation (like logic design, data structures) must complete foundation courses at an accredited institution prior to or during admission. Similarly, Robotics & Automation applicants must show competence in programming, circuits, and mechanical design; deficiencies require additional coursework.
Are the MS Programs STEM approved?
Yes. Engineering MS programs qualify as STEM fields and allow F-1 visa holders to apply for OPT and STEM OPT extensions.
Are there any prerequisites?
Yes. Prerequisites vary by program. For example in Computer Science and Engineering, prerequisites include courses such as programming, circuits, data structures, and engineering math.
Prerequisites: Can I take them on Coursera, edX, Straighterline etc? No. Only courses from accredited institutions (i.e., regionally accredited colleges/universities) count. Online course platforms like Coursera, edX, or Straighterline are not accepted.
Do you require work experience?
Not necessarily, work experience isn't required for most programs. However, engineering management programs and higher-level degrees like Ph.D./Engineer's may prefer or require it.
Which do you prefer, GMAT or GRE?
The GRE is the standard test for engineering programs. Some specialized tracks may waive it; check in with our graduate admissions team at gradengineeradmissions@scu.edu.
Are there minimum test scores for the GMAT, GRE, TOEFL, IELTS, and Duolingo? And how long are test scores valid?
GRE: No minimum, though programs have averages (e.g., ~300+). TOEFL/IELTS/Duolingo: Required for non-native speakers, valid for up to 5 years.
What school code should I use to send my official test scores?
GRE: Santa Clara University's code (institution code 4851). TOEFL: Code 4851. IELTS/Duolingo: Follow SCU's guidelines on their Graduate Admissions portal.
