Myths and facts

Many people believe that free speech means no one can interfere with the right of a U.S. citizen to say precisely what they want where they want.  Not exactly.

This video was developed by a team of Santa Clara University seniors, all Hackworth Fellows at the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics during the 2017-'18 academic year. The team consisted of Sarah Tarter, Taylor Berry, Maria Lutgarda Glorioso, and Anand Purohit. They spent the year blogging about free speech and civil discourse, hosting community dinners to discuss difficult issues, and engaging in public events like a conversation with CNN star and comedian W. Kamau Bell about free speech and civil discourse. The team created this video in order to help other college students better understand the legal and ethical issues surrounding free speech.
