Visiting SCU Questions:

Any news about being able to "tour"/visit school campus?
To protect the health and safety of our guests and campus community, we have canceled all student-led campus tours and in-person information sessions until further notice. This precaution has been taken to protect and provide peace of mind to visitors, students, faculty, staff and families. Once visits to campus are available you will be able to make your reservation using our visit calendar.  We have a variety of ways for you to #DiscoverSCU--from webinars to videos and podcasts to connecting on social media. In order to stay up to date with the most recent SCU news and information regarding campus and tour availability, please join our prospective student mailing list.

Textbook Questions:

Do we need to buy textbooks before class starts?
It is always advisable to order your textbooks as soon as students have registered for their courses.  The university bookstore processes book orders in the order, by date, they are received.  We will start to process Fall orders the last week of August.  If students wait until the last minute to order their texts, it may take a longer to process, depending upon how many orders are submitted at the last minute.  Also, if orders will need to be shipped, students would need to add 1 to 7 days to their orders depending upon where the order will be shipped, on top of the normal 48 to 72 hours to process orders that are submitted the week before classes start.

When do we know what textbooks are needed?
Students can log in to their Ecampus page and pull up their registered term.  Once they have pulled up the term, on the top right there will be a button "order textbooks".  Click on the button, this will take the students entire term over to the bookstore website to show them all the required and recommended texts faculty have submitted for their courses.  If faculty haven't submitted an order, check back every 48 hours to see if an order has been submitted.

Where can I get a list of books that will be used? Please see the above answer, as they are related.

Transferring to Leavey School of Business Questions:

My daughter was accepted as a transferring sophomore into the College of Arts and Sciences. She would like to apply to the Leavey School of Business. What is the process?
The process takes place once per year and  can be found at:  https://www.scu.edu/business/undergraduates/academics/internal-transfer-process/

Can you transfer into the business school as a rising junior?
If accepted during the internal transfer process, a student at any level can transfer into the LSB.

For students that want to transfer to business school from engineering school. What is the acceptance rate?
The acceptance rate varies slightly each year.   On average there are about 85-90 students who apply for internal transfer and we accept approximately 25-30 students.  So, approximately 30% are accepted.

General Leavey School of Business Questions:

Can you address student study groups, is there a plan to help facilitate them?
For students who are attending face-to-face, the University is working on plans to make breakout rooms available and reservable online for small groups of students who would like to study together indoors at a safe distance. Depending on the online course, online breakout rooms are often used to facilitate online study groups, and resources will be available to help students engage with online learning. (Tutoring is also planned to continue through the Drahmann Center; it will be available online for all students, regardless of the modality of their courses.)

Fall Registration Questions:

How many percent of School of Business class will be all on-line, in-class, and mixed?  Will it be possible to have a complete online fall quarter?
The University is still gathering and assembling the data, but the first indications suggest that about a quarter to a third of Undergraduate Business courses will be modified face-to-face. The modifications will vary depending on the needs of the course, the students, and the faculty. All courses will have online back-up, so it will be possible to have a complete online fall quarter.

Are there fall courses that might work well on line?
The courses that are listed as online are the ones that faculty have designed specifically for online. While the modified face-to-face  courses will have online backup, they will not be designed for online per se.

Are classes filling up since this is one of the latter orientation dates?
We will accommodate all students in classes for each registration/orientation session.

It shows that most classes are closed right now.  Why is that?  When can changes be made?
Open classes will appear before the Orientation/Registration date.

Is there still a student orientation scheduled for 7/30?
Yes, there is still an orientation/registration session scheduled for Thursday, July 30th.

If a student wants to make a change after they set their schedule how can they do that? Especially as more information becomes available.
If there is space during  open enrollment,  students can switch courses.     However,  we do have limited space in each course. All pre-enrolled courses  cannot be swapped or changed.

Foreign Language Requirement/ Placement Process Questions:

Does my child need to take a Second Language exam now even if he will take it in the fall? When is the best time to take it?
ALL students must complete the language placement process PRIOR TO REGISTERING for their first language course at SCU. Students may not self-place.

For more information on the language placement process, we have developed the following FAQ to help students: https://www.scu.edu/modernlanguages/student-resources/placement--proficiency-testing/language-placement-process-faqs/

Math/Calculus Questions:

Any pros/cons on which course to take Math 11 vs Math 30/31?
Both sets of courses cover the same fundamental tools: differentiation and integration. Math 11 and 12 is best suited for students who are genuinely motivated by an interest in Mathematics and related fields; they are required for Business Students to add a second major in Math or Computer Science or to add a Math minor. Math 30 and 31 are best suited for students who are interested in applying the math tools to business problems: they will learn differentiation and integration by applying those tools to the problems they will see in their Business courses.

LSB Advising Questions:

Do you have a Peer Advisor who is both a Division 1 athlete and a business major?
We do have a great partnership with athletics to ensure that student athletes receive the academic advising they need to succeed while at SCU. Athletics and Denise Ho, Director of Academic Advising, Leavey School of Business have recommended student athletes meet with their team academic advisor and their peer advisor to get the best information for academic planning. We found this works best for our student athletes.

Is there a year by year version of the requirement checklist?
Academic advising at Santa Clara University is a cooperative effort between students, faculty, and staff which encourages students to master advising resources for making sound programmatic decisions as intentional learners and to explore educational and career opportunities. We have a requirement checklist by major and a four year course planning sheet for students to help guide them. We have recommendations for students such as their first year to complete their calculus requirement since our business courses require a good foundation in math. A student can course plan with their peer advisor, faculty advisor, or make an appointment with a University Advisor at the Drahmann Center to ensure they are on track with their academic requirements.

Do students who may want to do the 3-2 MBA program have a different course requirement list?
4+1 is a program designed to provide SCU undergraduates an opportunity to complete a master’s degree in as little as 10 months. During their senior year, students will enroll in 4-6 graduate level units per quarter. If students pass their classes with grades of B or better, they will be eligible to fastrack their Master’s degree the following year, shaving up to 2 quarters* off the typical full-time program. I would recommend they meet with the MS program during their sophomore year to course plan. You can find more information at  https://www.scu.edu/business/ms-4plus1/

It is possible for a business student to double major or to minor in something from the school of Arts & Science?
Business students can choose one major within the Leavey School of Business. Economics is a "dual citizen" as SCU offers an economics major in Leavey School of Business and through the College of Arts and Sciences. A business student can major in Finance through Leavey School of Business and major in Economics through Arts and Science. The benefit of receiving a business degree at a liberal arts university is that they can add another major and minor in the Arts and Science and in the School of Engineering.

Wondering what ratio of students to advisors is?
The academic advising structure for first year students will work with their peer advisor on core curriculum, academic policies and procedures and course planning. The peer advisor has 10-12 first year students that they will work with for the entire academic year. The peer advisors will connect with their first year advisees at least three times a quarter. The faculty advisor role is a conversation partner about major discernment, academic difficulties, and major course requirements. Faculty advisor ratios vary from 20-30 students any given year. We also have the Drahmann Advising Center where students can make an online appointment.

When will students be connected to their peer advisor?
We have created a series of check-ins with incoming students. During the summer, we have two summer peer advisors who reach out a week prior to your student’s orientation date with drop-in advising hours for your student to attend. They also can schedule individual appointments if needed.

During the academic year, each incoming student is assigned a peer advisor who will connect with them prior to coming to SCU and will connect with them during the first couple of weeks of class in the Fall. All first year LSB students will have a mandatory advising appointment with their peer advisor in the fall quarter. In the winter quarter, we will be hosting drop in hours for students to attend.  In the spring,  we host mandatory advising appointments to course plan with students.

Computer Technology Questions:

What about chromebooks?
SCU has technology support for both PC and MAC and does not state a preference of one over the other. Many students on campus have MACs. But if your business student decides on a major such as MIS or AIS, a PC might be better for the purpose of Excel. As far as discounts go, see this page, look for the shopping cart tile:

Housing Questions:

Housing Website: https://www.scu.edu/campus-life/housing/

When is the residence hall  move-in date?
For all those who have submitted a housing application, information regarding housing was shared on Wednesday, July 15th.

Currently, the Housing Office is planning to confirm housing assignments in mid-August. The move-in process is still being worked on, as county and state regulations continue to shift due to COVID 19. It is likely that the move-in process will be a lengthy one. Once more details are solidified, information will be shared on the Housing website.

Can you provide a checklist for items we need to bring for living in a dorm?
Please refer to the housing website: https://www.scu.edu/campus-life/housing/

Can both parents be on campus during drop off?
Yes, students can have up to two adult family/friends to assist with their move but can only be within the residence hall during the assigned move-in time. Additional move-in information will be sent in August.

My child had lined up a roommate.  Since everything is now single dorm rooms, are you putting the now former roommates in the same dorm?
In order to maximize the flexibility needed to place all students who qualify for fall term housing, we cannot commit to keeping suitemates, roommates, etc adjacent to one another.  However, once we understand how many students want to live on campus, we will be better able to ascertain if and where we can keep students close to their original assigned space.

Does my child need to completely move out during Thanksgiving break? If yes, will he be assigned a new room?
With the exception of the University Villas, neighborhood units and grad units, the residence halls will close at 9 p.m. on November 21 and will not reopen until January 3, 2021. While students are required to vacate their assigned space by the 9 p.m. deadline on November 21, students may leave their belongings behind.  More information can be found at https://www.scu.edu/fall-2020-housing-faq/

Wellness Questions:

Are health forms online? Please refer to the Cowell Health Center website:  https://www.scu.edu/cowell/

Student Involvement Questions:

Could you give us more details on business fraternity?

Alpha Kappa Psi http://scuakpsi.com

Delta Sigma Pi  http://scudsp.com/

How does a student  learn about clubs on campus?
The Center for Student Involvement can support a student in pursuing and finding out information on clubs and organizations:  https://www.scu.edu/csi/

Tuition Questions:

Where can I find the total cost of attending SCU after financial aid?
Please contact OneStop Enrollment Center at https://www.scu.edu/onestop/.

How/when do we get the bill for the fall? When is it due?  Where can we check how much we have to pay after financial aid and when the payments are due?
Students will receive an email on the 1st of each month reminding them that a new billing statement is available to view in their eCampus portal. Students should set up their parents (or any other third party who may be paying the bill) as an Authorized User. This will allow parents to receive their own User ID and Password which they can use to log on to the SCU Pay Site to view and pay the bill. Once parents are set up as an Authorized User, they will also receive the reminder email on the 1st of each month so they don't have to remember to sign in and pay.

Bills are generated and available to view online on the 1st and the payment due date is always the 21st of the same month.
Due dates are:
August 21 (fall)
December 21 (winter)
March 21 (spring)

We encourage all students/parents to get in the habit of viewing the bill online every month (not just during the above months), just in case there are additional charges due during the other months (ie: Cowell Health Center co-pay fees, ACCESS Card charges, Library fines, etc.)

Parents can contact our OneStop Office with any questions. They are happy to assist! They can assist students with setting up their parents as Authorized Users, completing the FERPA Release and waiving the health insurance.

Contact info is here: 408-551-1000 or onestop@scu.edu M-F 9:00am-4:00pm

Internship Questions:

How early in the school year do students need to arrange internships for next summer?
We recommend that first year students spend time exploring their interests through clubs and other leadership opportunities to get a better idea of the scope of companies and organizations they may want to explore for employment opportunities.

The Career Center offers opportunities for students to engage with employers throughout the academic calendar. Students can create their Handshake account and begin searching for internships at any time. A guide for first year students can be found here

Accounting Department Questions:

Are a significant  number of SCU students continuing to receive offers from the Big Four Accounting Firms?
Over 80% of our accounting and AIS majors begin their careers at the Big Four.
