Laudato Si' and the Market

Using the market to address climate change

John Denniston and Ann Skeet

Does Pope Francis understand the free market?  Certainly some critics of his encyclical on the environment, "Laudato Si’", claim he does not.  But venture capitalist and social entrepreneur, John Denniston, and the Ethics Center’s Director of Leadership Ethics, Ann Skeet, see wisdom in the pope’s argument that moral considerations should temper the approach of businesses to their environmental responsibilities.

John Denniston’s remarks start at 3:40 in this video; Ann Skeet’s begin at 31:30.  This presentation was part of a larger conversation about "Laudato Si’," “Our Future on a Shared Planet: Silicon Valley in Conversation with the Environmental Teachings of Pope Francis,” sponsored by SCU’s Ignatian Center for Jesuit Education, Nov 3-4, 2015.
