Interim Associate Provost for Diversity and Inclusion

Professor Margaret M. Russell has been appointed to serve as Interim Associate Provost for Diversity and Inclusion for the 2017-18 academic year. Margaret will continue teaching on the faculty of Santa Clara's School of Law, while leading the Office of Diversity and Inclusion’s important work on recruitment, support, and retention of faculty of color at Santa Clara University. Margaret brings her wisdom and many years of experience working on diversity and civil rights issues to the position.

Margaret holds degrees from Princeton University and Stanford Law School and has taught constitutional law and civil procedure in Santa Clara University’s School of Law for over twenty-five years. She has been active as a scholar affiliated with the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics, the Ignatian Center, the Bannan Faculty Collaborative, and the Center for Social Justice & Public Service. She is also a past president of the Faculty Senate of the University and served on the Faculty Affairs Committee from 2011-14. 

In 2014, Margaret was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study the role of trial and appellate court women judges in Tanzania. She is a member of the American Law Institute, serves on the national board of the American Civil Liberties Union, and is editor of ​The First Amendment: Freedom of Assembly and Petition ​(Prometheus Books 2010). She also serves on the national board of the Princeton Alumni Corps, the board of the Tenpyozan Project, the advisory board of the Museum of the African Diaspora, and the advisory council of the Bay Area lawyers’ chapter of the American Constitution Society. She is a co-founder of the Equal Justice Society and the East Palo Alto Community Law Project. 

As Interim Associate Provost for Diversity and Inclusion, Margaret will lead the Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI) in collaboration with Ray Plaza, ODI Director. The Office will continue to provide assistance for inclusive recruitment and search procedures for faculty searches, and for the retention and success of faculty from underrepresented groups. Margaret will also chair the Council on Inclusive Excellence. She will collaborate with offices throughout the University in helping to promote a climate of inclusive excellence on campus.
