What is your project about? With the goal of improving water supply conservation and reducing urban heat islands within Santa Clara, I strive to construct bioswales along city roads. Bioswales are shallow channels next to or between roads that contain drought tolerant vegetation, efficiently capturing stormwater runoff and contributing to the urban tree canopy. A higher percentage of tree canopy coverage results in cooler surface temperatures, creating more walkable neighborhoods. I aim to address the disparity in surface temperatures across different neighborhoods in Santa Clara, as there is a correlation between higher median household incomes and cooler areas. Neighborhoods predominantly inhabited by people of color and those with lower median household incomes in East San Jose are more likely to experience higher surface temperatures. By identifying roads that would most benefit from bioswales, xeriscaping, and increased access to green space, a more just and inclusive urban landscape can be created.
How will this fellowship support you in your future scholarship/career goals? The SVP Sustainable Futures Fellowship will strengthen my ability to implement data-driven solutions that enhance the quality of life for communities in Santa Clara. The fellowship offers a valuable opportunity to develop the practical skills needed to move from data collection and equitable urban planning to action. As I pursue higher education, I am committed to staying in the Bay Area to support and give back to the vulnerable communities near Santa Clara University. The inequalities rooted in 1930s redlining were intensified with the tech boom. Fostering spatial justice through efforts like expanding green space access will support my growth as a community advocate. One that is equipped to combat environmental and social challenges through evidence-based solutions.
What extra/co-curricular activities are you involved in on campus? I love serving on the board for Fungi Club, dancing for Ballet Folklorico, and playing intramural soccer with my friends.
Other passions, hobbies, fun facts, or anything else you want to share: I love painting with watercolor and posting observations on iNaturalist. Any day I go to the beach or a museum is a good day!!
