    The Arete Prize is awarded to the Classics student who writes the best research or thesis paper.

  • From Tunics to Tan Suits: Fashion and Democracy Through the Ages

    The importance of appearance in politics is frequently lamented as a modern innovation. It is thought that in a prior, more sober, age, candidates were judged on the merits of their positions rather than the contents of their wardrobes. Nothing could be further from the truth.

  • Brendan 'Gabriel' Webb ’23

    Since graduation Gabriel has spent nine months teaching in Paris and is currently on a five month stint exploring his fatherland of Australia.

  • Evan Pivonka ’04

    Evan is the Assistant Director for Policy, Accountability, and Critical Events at the University of Virginia, where he also teaches in the Politics Department in the Program on Constitutionalism and Democracy.  

  • Joanna Homrighausen ’15

    Joanna earned a Ph.D. in Religious Studies from Duke University and is teaching at William & Mary in Virginia.

    Linda moved to Ireland in 2015 and recently completed a Diploma in Human Resource Practice.

  • New Student Award

    One of our new initiatives is an award for students coming into Santa Clara with backgrounds in Greek and Latin.

    As you may remember, the department hosts three events to celebrate our students every spring quarter.

    A double major in Classical Studies and Greek & Latin, Laura went on to pursue her Master's in Counseling Psychology at USF.

    A double major in Economics and Philosophy and a minor in Classics, Johana currently is the Program Manager of Fellowships and Internships for the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics within SCU!

  • Michael (Czapkay) Sudduth ’92

    Michael teaches Philosophy is the California Bay Area.  He also publishes in Philosophy and started writing fiction a few years ago.

    Kate joined our department in Fall 2025. Two books that she really enjoyed recently were Shelby Van Pelt’s Remarkably Bright Creatures and Hernán Diaz’s Trust.

  • Julie Holland ’94

    After graduating with a History major and Classics minor, Julie currently works for Caltech / NASA in the Jet Propulsion Lab.

  • Madison Givens '18

    Since graduating from Santa Clara, Madison completed two master’s degrees at Loyola University Chicago, and is currently a Ph.D. candidate in History at the University of Memphis.

  • Cameron Bick ’20

    Cameron Bick currently teaches at and works in the administration for the Chesterton Academy of St. James, a Catholic high school in Menlo Park, CA.

  • Lizette Faraji ’09 and Paul Breucop ’06

    The department actually played a surprising role in how our lives turned out. Paul and I met because he was giving a speech on Plato’s Symposium, and somehow that turned into a nineteen-year conversation we never stopped having.

  • Hallie Mullane (Née Bodey) ’12

    Having earned two masters degrees, Hallie currently works on extracurricular and co-curricular programming primarily in Global Education and International Student Services at SCU.

    Erika currently works in family law, teaches in the SCU Law School as an Adjunct Professor, and attends as many Sharks hockey games as possible!

  • D’Angelo Castillo ’23

    When he is not teaching Sunday School or wearing various other hats at his church, D’Angelo is in the final year of a master’s program in speech-language pathology.
